How verification works
Independent supplier data feeds, the Open Food Facts database, and the nutrition panel photographed on the physical pack. Each value is collected from whichever sources carry it, separately.
Values that agree across at least two independent sources publish as verified. A single-source value publishes as reported, and says so. When sources disagree, nothing publishes: the row reads under review until the printed label settles it.
Where the photographed panel is readable, its printed number is the one shown, and on many products the photograph itself sits beside the table so you can check it yourself. Calories are converted from labelled kilojoules (1 Cal = 4.184 kJ).
Questions, answered plainly
Where do the numbers come from?
Three independent places: supplier data feeds, the Open Food Facts database, and the nutrition panel photographed on the physical pack. Every value is compared across whichever of those carry it.
What does verified mean?
A value is published as verified when at least two independent sources agree within a small tolerance. A value carried by only one source is shown as reported, and marked as such next to the number.
What does under review mean?
It means the sources disagree about that value. Cals never publishes a number while its sources conflict; the row says under review until the pack label settles it, and the category's changes page records the outcome.
How are calories calculated?
Converted from the labelled kilojoules at 1 Cal = 4.184 kJ, the same conversion printed on Australian packs. A calorie figure inherits the verification status of the kilojoule value it comes from.
Why are there no prices?
Cals publishes composition facts only. Prices change daily and pull attention toward deals; the label does not change with the special. No prices, no sponsorships, no affiliate links.
A product is missing or looks wrong. Why?
Shelves change and reformulations happen. Each category is rebuilt from fresh shelf sweeps, and every category has a changes page listing real findings: reformulations, corrected feed errors and open reviews.
Are rankings ever sponsored?
Never. Rankings are mechanical: a stated metric, a stated method, ties shared honestly. Nothing on Cals is paid placement and nothing is hand-ordered.
